PI Vision treemap: box size and colour from AF attributes

Every asset is a box. Its size shows one attribute and its colour another, so the biggest assets and the ones that need attention stand out together.

Size by one attribute, colour by another

Compare magnitude and condition in one view, for example pressure as the size and OEE as the colour.

  • Assets from a fixed selection or a PI Vision search criteria, so new assets of the same type appear without editing the display.
  • Box size from a numeric attribute such as flow rate, power or capacity; assets with zero or no value shrink to the smallest box.
  • Colour on a gradient of two or more colours, with an automatic range from the current values or a fixed minimum and maximum.
  • A colour scale legend beside the chart, and a hover tooltip with the size and colour values.

Status colours from multi-state limits

Colour each box by the state of its value, so assets outside their limits are easy to find.

  • Multi-state limits on the colour attribute, added from the right-click menu.
  • Your own limits and state colours, as on other PI Vision multi-states.
  • Limits in the units of the attribute, such as OEE in percent.

Fixed colours per status or group

Group the boxes by a status attribute and give each value its own colour.

  • One colour per value of the grouping attribute, detected from the data, such as Running, Stopped, Failure and Maintenance.
  • A header above each group names the value, so the share of each state is visible at a glance.
  • Or let Auto mode colour the boxes from a palette.

Group the treemap by AF hierarchy or attribute and drill down

Organise the boxes the way your plant is organised, then open one group at a time.

Follow the AF hierarchy or group by attributes

Nest the assets by their place in AF, or by the values that matter for the comparison.

  • Hierarchy: boxes nest by AF element path, such as site, area and line, with the shared top-level folders left out.
  • Root shows or hides the top-level folder as a group.
  • Attributes: group by one or more attribute values, for example location first and manufacturer within each location.
  • None: one flat set of boxes for a simple side-by-side comparison.

Drill down from groups to single assets

Start with an overview of the groups and open the one that needs a closer look.

  • A click on a group opens it and hides the rest of the chart.
  • A breadcrumb below the chart returns to any higher level.
  • Each group box is sized by the total of its assets and, when colouring by value, coloured by their average.
  • Or set the click action to Quick Trend to open a trend of the clicked asset.

Treemap labels, filtering and export

Put the numbers on the boxes, connect the treemap to the rest of the display and take the view further.

Read the asset and its key values without hovering.

  • Several lines per box, such as the asset name, a speed and a production amount.
  • Each line with or without the attribute name in front, and with its own font size.
  • Units from AF and the PI Vision number format.
  • Label position Auto, Inside, Inside Left or Inside Right.

Filter other symbols, full screen and download

Use the treemap as the entry point of a dashboard and share what it shows.

  • Click Action Filter publishes the clicked asset to other symbols through linked filter channels.
  • Follows Asset Filter+ and other master filters and linked inputs.
  • Full screen view; download as PNG, SVG or PDF, or the data as CSV, JSON or XLSX.
  • Built-in themes or a custom theme, and a title with a subtitle.

Asset Treemap+ FAQ

How is it different from Heatmap+, Asset Analytics KPI+ and Asset Comparison Bar Chart+?

Asset Treemap+ shows many assets at once as nested boxes, with the size and colour taken from two attributes and the groups from the AF hierarchy or attribute values. Heatmap+ shows how values change over time as a colour grid. Asset Analytics KPI+ summarises many assets into a few KPI cards, such as a count or an average. Asset Comparison Bar Chart+ ranks assets in sorted bars. For flows between process stages, use Sankey Diagram+.

Can the treemap follow our AF hierarchy?

Yes. With Hierarchy grouping, the boxes nest by the AF element path of each asset, such as site, area and line. Top-level folders that all assets share are left out; Root shows the top-level folder as a group. You can also group by one or more attribute values instead.

Can the boxes show alarm or operating states?

Yes. Colour by value and add multi-state limits to the colour attribute from the right-click menu, so each box takes the colour of its state. Or group by a status attribute and give each value its own colour, such as Running in green and Stopped in red.

Why is an asset missing or very small?

The box size comes from the size attribute. Assets with a value of zero or below, or with no data, shrink to the smallest box. If an asset is missing completely, check the search criteria, for example Return All Descendants and the number of results.

What do we need to run it?

PI Vision 2021 or later with PI Web API, and PI AF Server 2018 SP2 or later. Asset Treemap+ runs in PI Vision and uses each user’s existing PI permissions.

How do we get Asset Treemap+?
