Manual Scans and PI Point Rule Reconciliation

This chapter covers the scanning tasks that need an administrator: reconciling PI Point rule changes and recovering a stuck scan. Deleting a single scan run is a support action described under Delete a scan run in the Reference. How operators queue manual scans, read the work list and use Run now is described in Scanning in the User Guide.

Overview

This chapter covers the scanning tasks that need an administrator: reconciling PI Point rule changes and recovering a stuck scan. Deleting a single scan run is a support action described under Delete a scan run in the Reference. How operators queue manual scans, read the work list and use Run now is described in Scanning in the User Guide.

What to know about manual scans

Manual scans are one-off actions; automatic monitoring keeps targets current. They do not wait for the heavy-work window and run whether or not automatic monitoring is started. The queue holds at most 100 requested runs, and a request that would exceed this is refused as a whole.

Reconcile PI Point rule changes

Changing a PI Point rule's match, archive, inventory setting or position can move points between rules across the estate, so a full PI Point scan of every PI Data Archive is needed.

  1. After saving a rule change, open Admin > PI Point Rules. The Full PI Point reconciliation required banner appears. Until the reconciliation completes, affected issues keep their previous state and Last confirmed time.
  2. If automatic monitoring is active, PI Nexus+ has already queued the reconciliation and the banner has no button. It runs in the next heavy-work window; to run it sooner, an operator can use Run now on the Scanning page's Queued tab.
  3. If automatic monitoring is off, choose Run Full Reconciliation. It is unavailable while another scan runs.
  4. When the scan succeeds, the banner disappears.

A scan narrowed to some rules does not reconcile ownership (see Run a manual scan in the User Guide).

Recover a stuck scan

Use recovery only when a scan stays active after Cancel has had time to finish. It needs the Admin role.

  1. On the Scanning page, open the Active tab and choose Recover on the scan. The button appears only when the scan looks stuck.
  2. Choose Recover stuck scan to confirm. PI Nexus+ cancels the background job, ends the run and frees the queue.
  3. If recovery is refused because a scanner process still owns the scan, stop the PI Nexus+ Scanner service, try again, then start the service.
