PI Nexus+ / Reference
License States
This reference lists what PI Nexus+ checks in a license, the states a license can be in, and what each state allows.
Overview
This reference lists what PI Nexus+ checks in a license, the states a license can be in, and what each state allows.
What is checked
| Item | Check |
|---|---|
| Signature | Signed by Software Athlete for PI Nexus+ |
| Validity period | Not before the start date and not after the expiry date. A new Evaluation license runs for 30 days from its first installation and must be installed within 90 days of its start date |
| Allowed PI servers | Every enabled PI Data Archive target is named in the license. New Evaluation licenses always name their PI Data Archives |
| PI Point capacity | The number of active PI Points in the PI Nexus+ database is within the licensed number |
The status is re-validated about once a minute. On a very large estate under heavy load, counting the PI Points can time out; PI Nexus+ then shows the last validated status and says so on Admin > License.
States
| State | Shown when | Scanning and inventory pages |
|---|---|---|
| Valid | All checks pass | Available |
| Missing | No license installed | Blocked |
| Malformed | The key cannot be read | Blocked |
| Invalid signature | Not signed by a trusted Software Athlete key | Blocked |
| Wrong product | The license is for another product | Blocked |
| Not yet valid | Before the start date | Blocked |
| Expired | After the expiry date, or an Evaluation was not installed in time | Blocked |
| PI server not licensed | An enabled PI Data Archive is not named in the license | Available. A banner names the archive, Admin > PI Data Archives marks it Not licensed, automatic scanning skips it and a scan that includes it is refused |
| PI Point capacity exceeded | More active PI Points than licensed | Available. PI Points above the capacity are stored as Not Evaluated until the scope is reduced or a larger license is installed |
Admin > License stays available in every state, so you can always install a new license. Installing a valid license takes effect at once; no new scan is needed.
Evaluation licenses
An Evaluation license is labelled throughout the app. Older Trial licenses are treated as Evaluation licenses.
| Area | Evaluation behaviour |
|---|---|
| Scans, health, targets, rules, tests, automation, licensing, administration | Full |
| Banner | PI Nexus+ Evaluation, the days remaining and the detailed objects remaining. Admins see Upgrade license; others see "Contact your PI Nexus+ administrator to upgrade." |
| Inventory pages | Full counts, filters and lists |
| Issues | Representative examples: 3 per issue type, at most 100 detailed findings, with a notice. Filtering or paging does not reveal other examples |
| Detail dialogs | 50 detailed objects per license, shared by all users and counted in the database. PI Nexus+ asks before using one; reopening is free. When used up: Evaluation detailed-object limit reached |
| Search | Button disabled |
| Change History | Page locked: Change history is not included |
| CSV exports | Buttons disabled |
| Suppress and restore | Buttons disabled |
| Check health, Update inventory | Hidden |
| Compression tuning | One manual run of up to 50 selected PI Points; no apply, restore, exclusions, exports, rule scopes or Auto Tune changes |
| Emails | No detailed attachments or object lists |
| Support bundles | Available, with sampled findings |
| Locked controls | Show a lock and Not available in the Evaluation version. |
| Role | Evaluation never grants more than the user's role allows |
Removing and reinstalling the same Evaluation license in the same database keeps its original expiry date.
