PI Nexus+ / Installation Guide

Upgrade, Repair and Uninstall

This chapter upgrades PI Nexus+ to a new version, repairs an installation and removes it.

Overview

This chapter upgrades PI Nexus+ to a new version, repairs an installation and removes it.

Upgrade

An upgrade keeps the components, identities, bootstrap.json, the logs and the database. The installer stops the service, site and app pool, replaces the files and starts them again. The web application then updates the database schema as the service account; no SQL administrator is needed.

Upgrade in a maintenance window with no scan running. If the database does not use snapshot isolation yet, the upgrade turns it on, which ends open transactions in it.

  1. Run the new PI-Nexus-Setup-<version>.exe as a local administrator.
  2. Open PI Nexus+ in a browser. The web application applies the schema changes before the first page appears. On a large database this can take tens of minutes; don't stop or recycle the app pool meanwhile.
  3. Check that Admin > SQL Server reads Compatible and Current.
  4. Check Admin > Support > Readiness for new errors.

The scanner service waits until the schema is current before it scans. On a split deployment, upgrade the web server first.

Note: An upgrade from 1.6.x applies migration 0010, which rebuilds an index on the AF attribute table. Expect a longer first start on an estate with many AF attributes.

When the schema update takes long

While it runs, Admin > SQL Server shows Running and the scanner log says it is waiting. That is not an error.

Under IIS the web application waits at most 55 minutes, then rolls the running migration back and starts without it; scans stay blocked. Then choose Apply on Admin > SQL Server and keep the page open until it reports the result.

A migration interrupted by a stop or restart is rolled back and runs again from the start; finished migrations stay applied. Never edit the migration records by hand.

Repair

Run the same installer version and choose Repair. It restores the program files and leaves the site, the app pool and the service identities as they are. Then check Admin > SQL Server.

Uninstall

Uninstall PI Nexus+ from Apps and Features. This removes the IIS site and app pool, the scanner service and the program files. It keeps the database, bootstrap.json and the logs.

For a complete cleanup, delete C:\ProgramData\Software Athlete\PI Nexus+ and any leftover C:\Program Files\Software Athlete\PI Nexus+, and have the SQL administrator drop the database once its data is no longer needed.
