PI Points

This chapter shows how every inventory list page works, and how to find and follow up PI Points with bad, stale or missing data.

This chapter shows how every inventory list page works, and how to find and follow up PI Points with bad, stale or missing data.

Work with any list page

PI Points, Point Sources, PI Interfaces, PI Adapters, External Systems, the AF pages and PI Vision Displays all work the same way. They show the Site chosen in the navigation.

  1. Read the cards at the top. On Point Sources, PI Interfaces, PI Adapters and External Systems a card is also a filter: click it to show only those rows, click it again to clear it.
  2. Type in the search box to find an object by name, path or the text the placeholder names.
  3. Choose Filters to narrow by server, health, type and so on. Clear all resets them. Show missing adds objects that the latest scan no longer found.
  4. Click a row to open the object's dialog. Its tabs, links and Back button are described in Investigate an Issue.
  5. Choose Load 250 more at the bottom to load the next rows.
  6. Choose the download button to save the filtered list as CSV (Operator role).
  7. On PI Points, the bar above the list selects points for Recalculate analyses (see AF Analyses and Recalculation).

Copy the page address while a dialog is open to share it; the link opens the same object and tab. Missing and excluded objects, and exports in general, are covered in Change History, Missing Inventory and Exports.

Concepts

  • Every PI Point is matched to one PI Point Rule. The rule decides which checks run (quality, stale, frozen, range, attribute checks) and at which severity. An administrator manages rules (see PI Point Rules in the Administration Guide).
  • Good, Warning and Bad are the point's health; Not Evaluated means the rule runs no check on it; Unknown means its quality could not be read.
  • Stale means no new value for a number of days. Frozen means values arrive, but the value no longer moves beyond the point's exception deviation, a typical sign of a failed sensor. Only numeric points are checked for frozen values.

Find stale or bad PI Points

  1. Open PI Points and read the Bad and Warnings cards.
  2. Choose Filters, set Health to Bad or Warning, and optionally a PI Data Archive, Point source or PI Interface.
  3. Read the Issues column: it names the finding, such as Stale PI Point, Uninitialized PI Point or PI Point With No Data.
  4. Read the Usage column: the AF attributes, analyses and PI Vision displays that use the point. Fix used points first.
  5. Click the row and read the Overview tab: the matched rule, the finding, the latest value and its timestamp.

When a whole PointSource or interface is affected, start from Point Sources instead: one row shows the health of all its points.

Check one PI Point now

After fixing a point, choose Check health in its dialog. PI Nexus+ reads the point again and updates its health and issues without waiting for the next scan.

When a PI Adapter Collector feeds the point, its Overview tab shows a Data source card; click it to open the Collector.
