Asset Time Series Chart+

Asset Time Series Chart+ trends the same attribute for every asset that an AF search finds, such as every assembly line, so readers see which asset behaves differently. One configuration gives every asset the same trace type, value scale and limits.

When to use it

Use this symbol when you need to:

  • Trend one attribute, such as speed, for all assets of a search and spot the asset that deviates.
  • Follow an asset search as it changes, or narrow the assets with a filter symbol.
  • Compare each asset with the limits stored in AF.
  • Compare the assets at two points in time and read the average, minimum and maximum between them.
  • Show digital states, such as Auto or Manual, for every asset.

Choose Combo Chart+ when you pick each trace yourself, for example PI Points, or when you need event frames. Choose Asset Comparison Bar Chart+ to compare one current value per asset.

Before you begin

  • Prepare AF assets that have the same attributes, usually from one element template. The attributes need numeric, digital, enumeration or Boolean history.
  • Configure PI Web API for Vision Library+. The chart loads its own history, so the account must be able to read the attributes.
  • Keep the chart within 100 traces, one for each asset and attribute. Twenty assets with four attributes make 80.

Add and set up the symbol

  1. Select Asset Time Series Chart+ in the PI Vision symbol gallery.
  2. Drag the Speed attribute of an assembly line onto the display. You can also drag an asset or an attribute category.
  3. Right-click the symbol and select Add Dynamic Search Criteria.... Expand Asset Name, enter Line ? and select Refresh. The ? stands for one character.
  4. Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Time Series Chart+.... Under Data Retrieval, set Mode to Interpolated and Interval to 20 Minute.
  5. Under Attributes, select Speed and set Label to Asset.
  6. Close the pane. The chart shows one trace for each assembly line, and the legend shows the latest values.

A chart starts with Mode on Default, which loads a sample of the history that suits long ranges. Interpolated gives every asset the same sample times, which makes the assets comparable. The screenshots below show assembly lines from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on 10/9/2026.

Common tasks

Choose which assets to compare

Use this when the chart shows too many assets, or the wrong ones.

  1. Right-click the symbol and select Search Criteria....
  2. Expand Asset Name (1) and enter a name. * stands for any characters and ? for one character, so Line 1* finds Line 1 and Line 10.
  3. Expand Number of Results (2) and enter the most assets you want.
  4. Select Refresh (3).

The chart shows only the matching assets. Search Root, Asset Type and Asset Category narrow the search further, and Asset Order sorts the results.

Choose what the trace names show

Use this when the legend, the tooltip and the rulers must name the attribute as well as the asset.

  1. Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Time Series Chart+....
  2. Under Attributes, select the attribute, here Speed (1).
  3. Set Label (2) to Asset | Speed, Asset, Speed or <Custom>. With <Custom>, type the text.

The legend shows the asset name and the attribute name. With the custom text Rate, it reads Line 0 | Rate: the text replaces the attribute part only. A new attribute starts with Asset | Speed.

Narrow the chart with a filter

Use this when operators choose assets by a value, such as the operating mode.

  1. Place an Asset Filter+ on the display and list the Mode attribute.
  2. Click a value in the filter, here Auto (1).

The chart keeps the assets that have this value, here Line 0, Line 1, Line 5 and Line 7, and shows the filter indicator (2). The filter can only narrow the assets that the search finds. To ignore the filter, open Interactivity > Filtering and turn Ignore Master on.

Compare assets against their limits

Use this when the attribute has limits in AF, and you need to see which assets leave them. Each asset is checked against its own limits.

  1. Right-click the symbol and select Add Multi-State....
  2. Select the attribute, here Speed, and select Enable Multi-State (1).
  3. Set Color series (2) to ON. Each point takes the color of its state.
  4. Keep Lines (3) ON to draw each limit as a dashed line with its name.

The chart draws the limits of this attribute, here Upper Limit 1 at 60 and Lower Limit 1 at 40. Values above 60 are blue, values between the limits green and values below 40 orange. The legend keeps the trace colors, so hover a point to see which asset it belongs to. Edit the colors in the States list of the pane.

Zoom and pan into a period

Use this to look closely at part of a long range.

  1. Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Time Series Chart+....
  2. Under Interactivity, check that Enable Zoom (1) is ON, choose the Drag mode (2), and keep Apply to Display Time (3) ON.
  3. Close the pane and hover the chart to show the toolbar.
  4. Select Zoom In (3 in the second image) twice. Each click halves the visible time.

The chart shows 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM instead of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Because Apply to Display Time is on, the display time range changed too, so every symbol that follows the display shows the same period. Reset Zoom (5) returns to the range the display had before. The toolbar here is kept visible with Trend Options > Toolbar > Reveal > Always.

Compare the assets at two times

Use this to see how each asset changed between two moments, for example before and after a changeover.

  1. Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Time Series Chart+....
  2. Under Summary Table, set Show (1) and Start Expanded (2) to ON.
  3. Close the pane. Click the plot to place ruler A (1), and click again for ruler B (2).
  4. Read the A, B and B - A columns (3).

The table has one row for each asset. Each column shows the value of the asset at ruler A, at ruler B, and B minus A. Average, Min and Max cover the interval between the rulers. The table asks the server for the values at the ruler times, so they can differ a little from the values on the chart, which are interpolated between samples.

Use the symbol

What it shows
(1)The value scale of the attribute, shared by its traces on every asset.
(2)The time axis.
(3)The legend with the latest value of each trace. Click an entry to hide or show its trace for your session.
(4)The tooltip with every value at the pointer time.
(5)The toolbar. Hover a button to see its name.

Interactions

  • Hover the plot to read every value at the pointer time. Lines and areas interpolate between samples, steps and bars hold the previous value, and a scatter trace needs a sample at that time. A bad value stays a gap.
  • Click the plot to place ruler A, then ruler B. Drag a handle to move a ruler, or select Clear rulers. The chart shows the value of each trace at each ruler and the difference. With both rulers placed, the plot outside them is shaded, and an A-B arrow at the plot edge points to rulers outside the visible range. Rulers are not saved. Hover and rulers are shared with other time-series charts on the display.
  • Zoom with the mouse wheel, or with Zoom In, Zoom Out and Reset Zoom. Select Pan to drag the window, or Box zoom to drag across the period you want. With Apply to Display Time on, you can drag or zoom past the loaded range, and the display time range follows when you release.
  • Fullscreen opens a larger view without the summary table. Download saves PNG, SVG or PDF images, or CSV, JSON or XLSX samples of the visible traces. Your administrator can turn the data exports off.
  • A live range shows a dashed marker at the current time.
  • Select drags a band that sets the summary interval without zooming. Toggle Summary opens or collapses the table. Both are available when the table is on.

Nothing in this chart writes data to the PI System or changes other symbols. The chart reacts to filter symbols and to a change of the asset context of the display.

Configure the symbol

Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Time Series Chart+... The pane sections appear in this order. Search Criteria... and Add Multi-State... open from the right-click menu.

Trend Options

LegendShow the legend, and set its position, placement, alignment and text. By default it lists each trace with its latest value.
Data LabelsLabels on the traces. Off by default.
ToolbarShow Toolbar turns the toolbar on. Reveal is On Hover or Always. Always keeps a band above the plot free for the buttons.
BarsWidth of a bar, 10 to 100 percent of its time slot. Available when a trace is a bar.

Scales

SettingWhat it does
Value ScalesMultiple gives each attribute its own scale, shared by its traces on every asset. Single puts all traces on one scale. Custom lets you create scales and assign each attribute with Scale under Attributes.
StackingOff, Normal (negative values below zero), Net (negative values subtract from the stack) or 100%, in Single and Custom mode. Line, area and bar traces on one scale stack across assets. Stack bars only limits it to bars.
Scale settingsShow, Position, Label Position, Invert Scale, Title, Scale Type, Ticks and Scale Range. Auto minimum starts at zero for bars and stacked areas, and unstacked areas scale to their data. In Multiple mode the settings are in the attribute's Value Scale group.
Time ScaleType Timeline or Discrete, Labels Scale or Range, Format Timestamps, Relative or Offset from Start Time, Fit Data and Date/Time Format. On Discrete, use Interpolated retrieval so that every asset shares the same instants.

A message in the pane warns when one scale mixes units, which happens when assets report different units for the same attribute. Choose a Display unit under Attributes to convert.

Data Retrieval

SettingWhat it does
ModeDefault loads an overview sized to the chart width. Recorded loads recorded values within the point limit. Interpolated loads one value per Interval, with optional Sync Time.
Start- and EndtimesDisplay time range, Custom time range or Duration and offset. A changed range resets the zoom.

A load is limited to 50,000 points across all traces. The chart does not change your mode or interval when a request exceeds the limit: shorten the range, increase the interval or choose Default.

Time Bar

Enabled adds the shared Time Bar below the chart. Lock Time Bar keeps the chart independent of later display time changes. Duration lists the ranges operators can choose, and Interval gives each an interval for Interpolated retrieval.

Interactivity

Drag modePan, Box zoom or Select. Select is available when the summary table is on. The toolbar choice lasts for your session.
Apply to Display TimeZoom and pan change the time range of the whole display. See Zoom and pan into a period.
FilteringFilter Indicator is Compact, Full or Hidden. Ignore Master ignores Master filters. Linked Inputs map another symbol's output channel to an asset property, and Asset Path is the safest property. See Filtering.

Summary Table

SettingWhat it does
Show, Start Expanded, Height % (0 = automatic)Add the table, choose whether it starts open, and set its height from 0 to 60 percent.
Identity and actionsDescription, Show, Regression, Moving Average and Multistate. Show hides one trace for your session. The other actions apply to the attribute on all assets.
StatisticsEnd Value, Average, Standard deviation, Min, Max, Event count, Range and the times of the minimum and maximum. They are time weighted by default.
Boundaries and differencesStart and end values and times, and differences. The ruler columns appear when both rulers are placed.

The interval is the one between the rulers, else the one drawn with Select, else the whole range. A dash in a cell means the result is not available.

Attributes

Select an attribute in Current Attributes to set it for all assets. Modify Attribute List adds or removes attributes, and the arrows reorder them. At least one stays.

Display unitDefault shows each asset in its AF unit. A unit from the list converts every asset from its own unit. Values you type, such as scale limits, are read in the displayed unit.
ScaleThe scale of the attribute. Available in Custom mode.
TypeLine, Area, Bar, Scatter or Range Area.
AppearanceColor, Line Shape, Line Style, Line Width, Marker, Marker Size and Opacity (%), as far as the type uses them.
AnalysisRegression and Moving Average with Samples, for each asset. Not available for Range Area.
State displayFor a digital, enumeration or Boolean attribute. Trend draws a stepped line, and Bands shades the state intervals with optional lines and labels.
TargetWith Range Area: the second attribute. The chart shades between the two values of each asset.

Assets

Available when the chart shows a fixed set of assets. A chart with a search lists its assets in Search Criteria... instead.

Trace Overrides

Select one asset and attribute in Trace to change its Visible, Label, Type or Color. These settings take precedence over the attribute. Reset removes them.

Search Criteria

Add Multi-State

StatesOne color for each band between the limits, and Bad data. A hidden state is not drawn, but keeps its name in readouts and exports.

For a digital attribute, Color series colors the Trend line, and Bands use the state colors directly.
