Radial Gauge+

Overview

Radial Gauge+ shows one or more values on a circular scale with configurable ticks, labels, ranges, and multi-state colors.

When to use it

Use this symbol when you need to:

• Show related process values against a shared operating range.
• Emphasize the current state and distance from configured limits.

Before you begin

• Prepare one or more numeric PI Points or AF attributes with compatible units and ranges.
• Define a meaningful scale and multi-state limits when range colors are used.

Add and set up the symbol

1. Select the symbol in the PI Vision symbol gallery.
2. Add the required data sources or asset context to the display.
3. Right-click the symbol and open its configuration pane.
4. Under Scale, choose the arc layout and an automatic or custom range.
5. Under Trace Options, select each data source and choose Marker, Bar or Needle.
6. Confirm that every value appears at the expected position.

Read the pointer, value, and active range together. Hover over the gauge for configured tooltip details.

Configure the symbol

The pane groups related settings into collapsible sections. Open only the sections you need; closing a section keeps its settings. Controls appear when they apply to the selected pointer or enabled feature. All settings remain available through these sections. Existing gauges retain their configuration when you open the pane.

Some configuration screenshots below show the earlier arrangement of the controls.

Configure style

Use General > Style to choose the theme, surface and outer container appearance. These settings control the common foreground and background, including ordinary scale and tick colors. A custom theme exposes its foreground, background and font controls. See Themes and container styles for the available choices.

Configure scale

The Scale section controls the arc shape and range of the gauge through its groups: Range for the value range, Layout for the arc shape, and Scale for the arc line.

Under Scale > Layout:

• Angle: Adjusts the opening of the scale arc.

360° 180°

• Start: Rotates the scale arc.
• Show: Shows or hides the scale arc line.
• Width: Sets the scale arc line width.

Under Scale > Range:

• Range: Sets the minimum and maximum values for the scale. Use Auto to derive these from the data, or Custom to set fixed values. Enable Invert Scale to reverse the direction from clockwise to counter-clockwise.

Configure ticks

The gauge supports Major and Minor tick marks, each configurable independently. Ticks are only visible when the scale is enabled.

Tick spacing: Choose Automatic, Fixed interval, or Multi-state boundaries for major ticks. With the scale hidden, this choice remains available under scale labels.

Example - Ranges mode:

For each tick type (Major and Minor), the following settings are available:

• Show: Enables or disables this tick type.
• Auto: Calculates minor tick intervals automatically. Disable it to enter a fixed minor interval.
• Size: Sets the length of the tick marks.
• Position: Places the ticks inside, outside, or centered on the scale arc.
• Color: Chooses between the theme foreground and the multi-state range color. Range coloring requires Multi-State to be active.

Configure labels

Configures the numeric value labels along the scale:

• Show: Enables or disables scale labels.
• Position: Places labels inside or outside the scale arc.
• Offset: Fine-tunes the label distance from the scale arc.
• Color: Chooses between Range (colors labels by their multi-state color - requires Multi-State to be active) and Custom (the theme foreground).

Range Custom (White)

• Units: Selects the unit of measurement displayed alongside scale value labels.
• Font Size: Sets the font size for scale value labels.
• Opacity: Sets the opacity of scale value labels.

Configure range bar

This section appears only when Multi-State is enabled. The range bar draws color bands and limit positions directly from the multi-state configuration - edit colors or thresholds in the Multi-State settings.

The following range bar display settings are available:

• Show: Shows or hides the range bar.
• Position: Places the range bar inside, outside, or centered on the scale arc.
• Size: Chooses between Uniform (constant width throughout) and Tapered (width increases or decreases along the arc).
• Width Start / End: Sets the start and end widths of the bar. Different values create a tapered effect.
• Offset: Adjusts the range bar's distance from the scale arc.
• Opacity: Sets the opacity for all range bands (used for non-highlighted bands when Highlight is active).
• Highlight: Emphasizes the active range band. All other bands are dimmed to the configured Opacity value. Set Opacity to 0 to fully hide non-active bands.

The data source list below the toggle lets you select which data source drives the highlight. Enable the checkbox next to a data source to activate highlighting for its current range.

Configure center label

The center label displays text inside the gauge arc. The following options are available:

• Show: Shows or hides the center label.
• Value / Label / Units: Selects which elements appear in the center label.
• Color: Chooses between using the current marker color or a custom text color.
• Text Shadow: Adds a subtle black shadow beneath the label text to improve legibility against the gauge background.

Note: To exclude a specific data source from the center label, open that data source's configuration, go to Label, and disable the Center Label option.

Configure tooltip

Configures the hover tooltip for gauge values:

• Enabled: Turns the tooltip on or off.
• Type: Chooses whether the tooltip shows the live data values or the multi-state range information.

Configure trace options

Select a data source in Trace Options. Value type chooses the live value or a summary such as average, minimum or maximum. Size factor scales the selected pointer relative to the gauge size; it accepts values from 0.2 to 2 in steps of 0.05. Needle length is configured separately.

Each data source can be rendered in one of three display modes:

• Marker: Renders the value as an icon positioned on the scale arc.

• Bar: Renders the value as a filled arc from the scale minimum to the current value position.

• Needle: Renders the value as a traditional gauge needle pointing to the current value on the scale.

Marker Settings

• Type: Selects the marker icon shape.
• Size factor: Sets the marker size relative to the gauge.
• Position / Offset: Controls the marker's radial position. Use this to prevent overlapping when multiple data sources share the gauge.

Bar Settings

• Size factor: Sets the bar arc width relative to the gauge.
• Position: Places the bar inside or outside the scale arc.
• Rounded: Enables rounded end caps on the bar arc.

Needle settings

• Length: Sets how far the needle reaches along the gauge radius, as a percentage.
• Size factor: Scales the needle thickness and cap relative to the gauge.

Label Settings

Each marker, bar or needle can display a label. The following options are available:

• Show: Choose Off, Value, Name, or Name + Value for the floating label. Turning it off retains its text and appearance settings.
• Units: Shows units with value annotations. This setting also controls this source's center-label units when both the source and the gauge enable center labels and the global center-label Units option is on.
• Font size, Bold and Background: Control the floating label appearance.
• Center Label: Includes this data source's value in the center label. If only one data source has this enabled, the value is displayed large. If multiple data sources are enabled, their values are stacked vertically.

Single Label Multiple Labels

Style settings

• Opacity: Sets the pointer opacity as a percentage. Scale-label and range-band opacity also use percentages in the pane.
• Color: Chooses between Custom (a fixed static color) and Range (the color of the multi-state range the current value falls within).
• Border Color / Width: Sets the pointer outline. These settings also apply to a floating label when its background is enabled.
• Background: Available for Bars only. Sets the background fill color of the area beneath the bar arc.

Data quality

Radial Gauge+ supports Stale warning. When any displayed live pointer is stale, the amber clock's tooltip identifies each affected data source.

Troubleshooting and limitations

• Pointer missing or pinned to an edge: Check the value, scale range and data status.
• Range colors unavailable: Configure multi-state rules before selecting range colors.
