Asset Analytics Pie+

Asset Analytics Pie+ turns a set of AF assets into a pie or donut chart. Count the assets or total an attribute such as production for each mode, template, or asset, draw one pie per category, and let readers click a slice to filter the rest of the display.

Overview

Production of eleven assembly lines by operating mode

Watch the demo

See Asset Analytics Pie+ in a practical PI Vision workflow.

When to use it

Use Asset Analytics Pie+ when you need to:

  • Show what share of the assets falls into each category, such as the lines in each operating mode.
  • Show what share of a total each category or asset contributes, such as production by mode.
  • Keep the largest assets and group the rest as Others.
  • Draw one pie for each value of a second attribute, such as one pie for each mode.
  • Let readers click a slice to filter the other asset symbols on the display.

Choose Asset Analytics Chart+ when readers must compare precise values or many categories. Choose Asset Analytics KPI+ when the results should appear as KPI cards, and Event Analytics Pie+ when the pie should summarize event frames.

Before you begin

  • Prepare the AF assets: either a fixed set of elements, or an asset search by database, root, and template.
  • For a sum, average, minimum, maximum, median, or standard deviation, use a numeric attribute. Text, Boolean, and date attributes offer only Count and Count Distinct.
  • Each asset contributes its current value. The pie does not aggregate an attribute over the display time range.
  • For a click that filters other symbols, add asset symbols such as Asset Analytics KPI+. See Filtering dashboards.

Add and set up the symbol

  1. Select Asset Analytics Pie+ in the PI Vision symbol gallery.
  2. In the Assets pane, find an asset such as Line 1 and drag it onto the display. The pie shows one slice that counts the asset by its first attribute, here |Active.
  3. Right-click the symbol and select Add Dynamic Search Criteria.... The pie now counts every asset with the same template under the same root, with one slice for True and one for False.
  4. Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Analytics Pie....
  5. Under Dimension, open Values and enter a Title (1) such as Lines.
  6. Open Arguments and set Value (2) to the attribute that defines the slices, such as |Mode.
Values and Arguments groups with the title Lines and Mode as the argument

The pie shows one slice per operating mode, sized by the number of lines in that mode. The title above the pie is the Title of the value.

Note: Attribute names show a leading | in the Value lists. Asset properties such as Asset Name and Template Name have none. A state attribute also offers its levels, such as |Mode|Level1.

Common tasks

Total an attribute for each category

Use this when slices should show how much, not how many, for example the production of the lines in each mode.

  1. In the configuration pane, open Values.
  2. Set Value (1) to a numeric attribute, such as |Production Amount.
  3. Set Summary (2) to Sum. Average, Min, Max, Median, and Standard Deviation are also available.
  4. Enter a Title (3), such as Production.
  5. Open Arguments and set Value (4) to the attribute that defines the slices, such as |Mode.

Each slice is the total for one mode, and its label shows the value with its unit, as in the first image of this article.

Keep the largest assets and group the rest

Use this when the pie should show one slice per asset, but there are more assets than the pie can show.

  1. In Arguments, set Value to Asset Name.
  2. Set Top N (1) to ON and Mode (2) to Top. Select Bottom for the smallest.
  3. Enter the Count (3), for example 5.
  4. Set the ranking Value (4) to the value that decides the ranking.
  5. Leave Others (5) ON to add one slice that sums all remaining assets.

The pie keeps the five lines with the largest production and adds an Others slice.

Draw one pie for each category

Use this when you want the same breakdown side by side for each category, for example how many lines in each mode are active.

  1. In Values, set Value to Asset Name, Summary to Count, and Title to Lines.
  2. In Arguments, set Value to |Active.
  3. Open Series and select +.
  4. Set Value (1) to the attribute that splits the pies, such as |Mode. Top N keeps only the top or bottom pies.
Series group with Mode as the value
  1. Open Style. Under Layout, select Rows and set the Count to 2. Auto fits the pies to the symbol, and Columns fixes the number of columns.
  2. Open Data Labels. Set Position to Inside and Background to OFF, so the labels fit on small pies.

The symbol draws one pie for each mode, titled with the mode, and arranges them in two rows. The legend lists the slice categories once for all pies.

Show shares as a donut with percentages

Use this when readers care about proportion more than the raw values.

  1. In the configuration pane, open Style.
  2. Under Type, select the donut button (1).
Type buttons with the donut selected
  1. Open Data Labels. Set Name (1) and Value (2) to OFF.
  2. Set Percent (3) to ON.

Each slice shows its share of the pie. The legend still names the slices.

Filter the display with a click

Use this when a click on a slice should narrow the other asset symbols on the display.

  1. In the configuration pane, open Interactivity > Selection and set Click Action (1) to Filter.
  2. Open Filtering and set Output Mode (2) to Master to filter every symbol that listens to Master filters. Linked and Both publish to named channels. See Filtering dashboards.
Selection and Filtering groups with Click Action set to Filter and Output Mode set to Master

A click on a slice (1) makes the other asset symbols recalculate for the assets of that category. Here the Asset Analytics KPI+ cards count only the five lines in Auto mode and show a filter icon (3). The clicked pie keeps all its slices. Select Clear Filter (2) in its toolbar to remove the filter.

The pie also follows filters from other symbols. When you select entries in an Asset Filter+, the slices recalculate for the matching assets.

Check the assets behind a slice

Use this when a reader asks which assets make up a slice, or needs the numbers in a spreadsheet.

  1. Hover the pie and select Inspect Data in its toolbar at the top right. The dialog opens on the Summary tab, with one row for each slice: the pie, the category, the value, and its percentage of the pie.
  2. Select a row, for example Auto.
  3. Select the Rows tab (1). It lists the assets behind that slice with their properties and attributes. The count (2) shows 5 of 11 assets.
  4. To keep the data, select CSV, JSON, or XLSX (4). The file holds the tab you are viewing.

Data as of (3) shows when the dialog read the pie, and Refresh reads it again. The attribute values change while the dialog is open, so refresh before you compare it with the pie. Select the same Summary row again to see all assets.

Use the symbol

What it shows
(1)The title of the pie, the Title of the value. With a series, each pie has its own title.
(2)A slice. Its angle is the share of the count or total for that category.
(3)A data label with the name, value, or percentage, as configured.
(4)The legend. One entry per slice category, with the slice color.
  • Hover a slice to see its category, value, and percentage of its pie.
  • Click a slice to do what Click Action says: nothing, drill down, or publish a filter. A click never writes to the PI System.
  • Toolbar: hover the pie to show its buttons at the top right. Inspect Data shows the numbers and the assets behind the pie, see Check the assets behind a slice. Clear Filter shows while a click on this pie filters the display or has drilled down, and clears that filter or drill-down. Fullscreen opens the pie at the size of the display. Download offers images and data files with one row for each slice. Your administrator can hide the data formats and the export buttons of Inspect Data.
  • Filters: an Asset Filter+ or another asset symbol narrows the assets and a filter icon appears. Ignore Master keeps the pie unaffected.

Configure the symbol

Right-click the symbol and select Configure Asset Analytics Pie.... The right-click menu also offers Search Criteria... (or Add Dynamic Search Criteria... for a fixed set of assets). The groups appear in this order.

Dimension

GroupSettingWhat it does
ValuesValueThe property or attribute to summarize. The pie uses the first value in the list. Properties are Asset, Asset Name, Description, Template Name, Path, and Has Children.
SummaryCount, Count Distinct, Sum, Min, Max, Average, Median, or Standard Deviation. Text, Boolean, and date values offer only Count and Count Distinct, as buttons. Used in Total an attribute for each category.
Title, ShowTitle names the value and is shown as the pie title. Show set to OFF hides the value but keeps it for ranking.
ArgumentsValueThe property or attribute that defines the slices. Several arguments combine into one category, or become drill-down levels.
Group IntervalAvailable for date attributes. Groups by Day-Month-Year, Month-Year, Year, and other intervals.
TitleNames the argument.
Top NKeeps the top or bottom slices. Mode, Count, Value, and Others set the details. Used in Keep the largest assets and group the rest.
SeriesValue, Group Interval, CaptionSplit the data into one pie for each value. Used in Draw one pie for each category.
Top NKeeps the top or bottom pies. Others adds one pie that combines the rest.

Trend Options

GroupWhat it does
TitleShows a title and a sub title, with font size and alignment. Show Pie Titles puts a title above each pie.
StyleTheme, Surface, Container Style, and Font Size. Type selects the pie or the donut. Layout arranges several pies: Auto fits them to the symbol, Rows and Columns fix the number of rows or columns. Used in Show shares as a donut with percentages and Draw one pie for each category.
LegendEnabled, Position, Placement (outside or inside the chart), Alignment, Size, and whether the Color shows as a Marker or as Text. The legend always lists the slice categories.
Data LabelsShow, Position (Auto, Outside, Inside), Name, Value, Percent, Background, and Font Size.
TooltipShow turns the hover tooltip on or off.
ToolbarShow Toolbar turns the toolbar with Inspect Data, Clear Filter, Fullscreen, and Download on or off. On by default. Reveal shows it On Hover or keeps it in view Always.
ColoringAuto uses the theme palette. Custom lists every slice category and lets you pick its color.

Interactivity

SettingWhat it does
Click ActionNone, Drilldown, or Filter. Used in Filter the display with a click.
DrilldownAvailable when Click Action is Drilldown. Drills through the Argument or Series list.
Filter IndicatorCompact shows a filter icon, Full adds the asset count, and Hidden shows nothing.
Ignore MasterON ignores Master filters on the display. Linked inputs still apply.
Linked InputsMaps a named channel from a publisher to a property of the assets. See Filtering dashboards.
Output ModeAvailable when Click Action is Filter. Master, Linked, or Both.
Linked OutputsAvailable with Linked or Both. Maps a property to a named channel.

Attributes

Current Attributes are the attributes the pie reads for every asset. Additional Attributes are the ones the assets offer but the pie does not read. Use the buttons between the lists to move entries, and the arrows to reorder. Only current attributes appear in the Value lists.

Numbers

The number format for values and labels.

Troubleshooting and limitations

SymptomCauseWhat to do
The pie is empty. The search found no assets, or no value or argument is set.Open Search Criteria... and select Refresh, and check Values and Arguments.
The pie title shows an attribute name such as Active after a vertical bar.The value has no Title.Enter a Title under Values.
Fewer assets than expected. The search stops at Number of Results, or a filter from another symbol is active.Raise Number of Results, clear the filter, or set Ignore Master to ON.
Slice labels are cut off or overlap. The symbol is small for the number of slices.Enlarge the symbol, turn off Name in Data Labels and use the legend, or use Top N.
Sum and Average are not offered. The attribute is text, Boolean, or a date.Choose a numeric attribute. The others offer Count and Count Distinct.
Clicking a slice does nothing.Click Action is None.Set Click Action under Interactivity > Selection.

Limitation: The pie reads the current attribute value. For a time-based answer, such as the total over the last shift, use an AF analysis or Asset Time Series Chart+.

Limitation: The pie draws only the first value. It has no total in the center.

Limitation: The pie publishes one selected slice at a time. It cannot publish several slices.
